Google Business Profile Websites Shutting Down: What Next?

February 7, 2024 / Category: Google Updates

Google recently announced that any websites created through Google Business Profiles will no longer exist, effective March 1, 2024. In March, these sites (typically ending in business.site) will be deactivated, automatically redirecting users to the corresponding Google Business Profile. However, this redirection will only be active until June 10, 2024. After June 10, attempts to access these sites will result in a “page not found” error. Companies using Google Business Profile as their primary online presence must create and build new websites on a different platform and update their Google Business Profiles with the new site URLs; otherwise, online visibility and potential new business will suffer. This change has significant implications!

How do businesses move forward?

March is fast approaching, and although Google suggests several platforms for building new websites, such as Squarespace, Webflow, Wix, GoDaddy, and others, several businesses are too busy to stop everything and dedicate the necessary time to creating a strategic, well-functioning, user-friendly website. There are more factors to take into consideration than you may think! Now is the ideal opportunity for businesses to curate a website optimized for visibility, attracting traffic, and encouraging sales. Here are a few elements to consider when moving to a new platform.

Which Platform to Choose -- There are nuances to every platform available for building a new website, and it can be challenging to know which is ideal for taking a business further. For example, some platforms are highly customizable, others have static templates, some are intuitive, and others require more hands-on management, and so on.

Communicating the Change -- Existing clients or customers need information about your changes. Will the new website be communicated via electronic newsletters, social media, or other channels? Is there a plan in place to not only communicate but promote the new website?

Leveraging SEO, Searchability, and Visibility -- Businesses are not just losing their Google Business Profile website, but its integration with Google Search and Maps. Establishing a robust digital presence and visibility means including proper keywords, meta descriptions, and quality content. Optimizing a website for search engines is vital!

Managing Ads Campaigns -- Businesses using Google Business Profile websites will need to update any ad campaigns and link them to the new website to ensure continuity of online marketing efforts and minimal disruption to user engagement.

Countless other factors need consideration for a smooth transition -- updates to the Google Business Profile to direct traffic to the new site once it is live, setting up redirects to the new website if a custom domain is already in place for your Google Business Profile website, the list can feel endless, and getting it all done before the deadline to ensure a smooth transition can feel impossible!
